Els: Evolution - Dragon Boat Festival Event

 

The Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional event celebrated across East Asia in the 5th month of the traditional lunar calendar. The festival commemorates the patriotic poet Qu Yuan, of the ancient state of Chu and is celebrated across South Korea, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, Japan, China and Vietnam.

 

The two most important things during the Dragon Boat Festival are - dragon boat racing and eating zongzi (sticky-rice dumplings). The festival was traditionally held to wish for good weather and a bumper harvest for the next year. Historically, people would wrap food in leaves or pack it in bamboo (called zongzi) and then throw them into the river, then later that day they would paddle their boats to go visit relative and friends. Later on, these practices slowly evolved into the modern-day "dragon boat races" and "zongzi eating" which are staples of the current Dragon Boat Festival.
